Understanding The 7 Main Chakras

The chakra system is a vital aspect of the yoga tradition, Ayurvedic medicine, Reiki healing and many spiritual practices. The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel," and the chakras are often depicted as spinning wheels or vortexes of energy in the body. There are many chakras that run through our bodies but today we'll focus on the seven main chakras that run along the body's energetic axis, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each chakra is associated with a specific location, color, element, sound, and function in the body.

1. The Root Chakra

The root chakra (Muladhara) is located at the base of the spine, between the coccyx and the first pelvic bone. This chakra is associated with the earth element, and its color is red. The root chakra governs the physical aspects of our lives such as our survival, security, and stability. It also encompasses our connection to our tribal roots and ancestry. When the root chakra is in balance, we feel grounded, centered, and safe. When it is imbalanced, we may experience feelings of anxiety, fear, and insecurity.

It governs our ability to experience pleasure and feel joy, as well as our sense of connection to others. When the sacral chakra is in balance, we feel creative, passionate, and emotionally balanced.
